Dave Koz & Friends: A Smooth Jazz Christmas (2001)

Cohesiveness is what separates this all-star Christmas release from the others. During the last four years, Dave Koz, vocalist Brenda Russell, pianist David Benoit, guitarist Peter White, and trumpeter Rick Braun have hit the road spreading holiday cheer among the smooth-jazz masses and their collaborative ease is palpable throughout these 14 tracks. Benoit is featured on "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," while Koz adds one of his best solos. Braun has the spotlight on "Little Drummer Boy," where Benoit shines too, and White highlights "Silent Night." All five players are credited for arrangements on most tracks, the craftiest of which is the '50's doo-wop of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," where you can almost hear the Drifters singing in the background. Russell also does a holiday version of her hit "Get Here," which is as powerful now as it was 10 years ago during the Gulf War. --Mark Ruffin

Gary Meek: ST (1991)

Gary Meek began playing piano at age five. He took up clarinet in junior high school and switched to alto sax to join the high school's jazz band. His early musical influences were a mix of his older sisters pop records and his fathers swing collection. He kept playing both instruments until today. While studying at the Grove School of Music and playing Jazz at the LA Jazz Workshops during the early 80s, he played keyboards to make a living. His big break came in 1986 when he became keyboarder for Dionne Warwicks worldwide tour. When returning from the tour, he started cooperating with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim as well as Jeff Lorber, who also performed on his first solo album. His style combines latin and funk with jazz improvisations. He composes in his home studio with an assortment of keyboards, a Apple Mac computer with "Performer" software and an ADAT recorder. For actual albums he prefers working with real musicians.

Arranger Rick Wilkins sweetens a few of the tracks with a string ensemble that is for the most part unobtrusive, but adds some colour to what Peterson and his cohorts are doing.
So what features characterize Christmas, Oscar Peterson-style?
Fun
On many tracks, Peterson locks into a lightly swinging, finger-snapping groove that casts even usually melancholic songs like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” in an upbeat light. He also fashions some of the tunes with nicely arranged introductions, such as a bewitching repetitive figure on “Jingle Bells,” and something straight out the book of Miles Davis on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Solo space for both Peterson and Lofsky is limited, but both make the most of it, especially when they dig into the changes on “Winter Wonderland.”
Reverence
While Peterson and the band sound like they’re having a ball throughout most of the album, the moments of levity are broken up by flashes of seriousness. A leisurely tempo is adopted for the Sinatra chestnut “The Christmas Waltz,” as well as “White Christmas” and this choice results in two moving ballad performances. For many of the album’s traditional carols, Peterson just concentrates on melody and forgoes any improvising. This very un-jazz like approach only really works on “Silent Night” and tends to bog down an album which is primarily upbeat.
On the surface, fun and reverence seem to be contradictory, but both emotions are rooted deeply in the Christmas season. It is a time to draw near to friends and family and to break away from the hustle-and-bustle of the rat race. But, it is also a time to reflect and count blessings. Intentionally or not, Peterson has created an album that captures both emotions.

Lew Soloff: Yesterdays (1986)

Lew Soloff ia s brilliant high-note trumpeter long in great demand for big bands and session work. He is also a distinctive soloist and an expert with the plunger mute. After studying at Juilliard, he freelanced in New York with Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, and Clark Terry, among others, and then was a part of Blood, Sweat & Tears during 1968-1973. Soloff was closely associated with Gil Evans from 1973 on, and also played with George Gruntz's Concert Jazz Band, the Manhattan Jazz Quintet, and Carla Bley; he was also teamed with the colorful trombonist Ray Anderson on several often-humorous recordings.

Reinhard Flatischler Megadrum: Layers of Time (1996)

The sixth entry in Flatischler's Megadrums series finds him working with percussionists Zakir Hussain, Airto Moreira, Valerie Naranjo, Glen Velez and Milton Cardona, as well as saxophonist and flutist Wolfgang Puschnig. The resulting album blurs boundaries between world music and new age, building percussion layers into cycles and spirals that become hypnotic, pulses beginning in deep, long tones that evolve into mid-range tones that become gradually more staccato. Layers of Time is a progressive work, in that the opening rhythms are gradually and subtly altered to allow each individual piece to blend with those preceding and following (the opening of the album is emphatic). Layers of Time is easily comparable to Mickey Hart's Planet Drum and At the Edge in that it reveals the inherent ability of percussion instruments to fully support extended musical pieces without falling prey to monotony and simple repetition.

Bob Mintzer Big Band: Homage To Count Basie (2000)

Count Basie was undoubtedly one of the most influential bandleaders in jazz history. It seems only logical then that saxophonist Bob Mintzer (who has dedicated most of his career to big-band music) would sooner or later record a tribute to the great father of swing. Joined by many of the top New York City-based jazz players including Pete Yellin on reeds, Scott Wendholt on trumpet, Phil Markowitz on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, and John Riley on drums, Mintzer and group create a touching homage to the Count.
We hear five tunes commonly associated with Basie on this disc. Among them are smart versions of "Cute," "April in Paris," and "Shiny Stockings." In addition, we are treated to three compositions by Mintzer himself, each reflecting the Basie style in one way or another. As a modernist, Mintzer adds a contemporary flair to otherwise classic swing charts such as "Lil' Darling" and "One O'Clock Jump," but it's the spirit of the music, not the harmonic vocabulary, that really matters here. For Basie, the key ingredient was always swing. Thankfully, Mintzer's music and ensemble live up to that great Basie reputation by swinging these charts just right.
• HOMAGE TO COUNT BASIE won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album •

Tom Schuman: Deep Chill (2004)

"DEEP Chill" is an eclectic blend of original and familiar melodies. Tom Schuman has invited some of the greatest artists in the business to join him: Peter White, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Kashiwa and vocalist Angei, just to name a few. The music on this CD is fresh and vibrant using the new "chill" format as a template for its overall demeanor. But it goes beyond anything that resembles this format and takes on a deeper, more adventurous path reinventing itself song after song. The familiar melodies previously referred to are Elton John's "Your Song", El Debarge's "All This Love", and finally, a funky gospel version of the song Aretha Franklin made famous, "Until You Comeback To Me". Tom Schuman's "Fearless Fostic" featuring Jeff Kashiwa, opens the CD with a funky groove that makes you want to dance away your troubles. Deep Chill then sets you up for a romantic evening at home or traveling in the car with your loved one. Guaranteed to chill you out with its great ballads, steaming rhythms and cool melodies.
JazzTimes (p.83) - "['Everybody Knows'] has groovy, computer-enhanced vocal inflections....Most of the album is filled with jazz, funk, R&B vocals, Latin, pop and fusion."
When exploring the true essence of keyboardist Tom Schuman, his skills as a jazz influence has yet to be completely realized; however, his ability to entertain and mesmerize his many legions of fans is already a given. Known primarily as the man behind the vibe for Spyro Gyra for more than 25 years, Tom has sporadically jumped out as a solo artist at various times during his tenure with the group. He has appeared on and co-written many of Spyro Gyra’s albums, in addition to serving as sideman and producer for other groups as well. His latest release entitled ‘Deep Chill’ continues a degree of illumination, while providing additional insight into the creative flow of Tom Schuman; arranger, composer and keyboardist for one of contemporary jazz’s most prolific groups.
An important fact about Tom Schuman most people do not know is that he is classically trained, with a talent that was recognized at a very early age. On top of that his penchant for jazz has been self-directed and has proven to be a tremendous asset; not only for Spyro Gyra, but to himself and other groups as well. This time out ‘Deep Chill’ re-visits Tom’s contemporary jazz influences once again. His previous release as a solo artist pushed him more into the direction of mainstream. That previous recording was not what most of his fans expected; therefore, he was definitely misunderstood and the level of acceptance for that particular CD was not very high. On the other hand, this newest release is a cut above and puts listeners in a state that allows them to do exactly what is intended: “Take a chill pill.’
‘Deep Chill’ is an album that grabs the listening palate from the onset. The CD is filled with a familiar blend of cover songs and melodic originals, all of which are deeply rooted in the influences of jazz, R&B and pop. To magnify the essence of this recording even more, Tom includes the skillful instrumental articulations of Peter White, Chuck Loeb, Jeff Kashiwa and a host of other notable musicians to keep ‘Deep Chill’ in focus mode. The first track entitled “Fearless Fostic” is one of nine original Schuman compositions. That tune in itself sets the stage for Tom’s intuitive approach. Relying on saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa as a backdrop, Tom provides a bit of funk-oriented antics to get a picturesque groove going; one that is light on funk but has a bit of toe-tapping action attached to its rhythm. Another jewel can be found on “Everybody Knows,” a song that captures your attention with the syncopated vocal radio improvisations of Jessie Galante, a driving bassline and Tom’s ever present melody in front. Other tracks providing cover for ‘Deep Chill’ includes Elton John’s “Your Song,” Aretha Franklin’s “Until You Come Back To Me” and El DeBarge’s “All This Love,” all of which have a profound impact upon Tom Schuman’s chill factor concept.
One of the more intriguing aspects of Tom Schuman’s ability is the fact that he is so multi-faceted. He is one of the most skilled songwriters, arrangers and producers of his generation. These attributes coupled with his superb musicianship places Tom in a category of unparalleled proportions. ‘Deep Chill’ puts yet another creative feather in Schuman’s hat as a contemporary jazz influence. Although he is best known for his history with Spyro Gyra, Tom Schuman is gradually being recognized by the general public as one of the most significant artists of his time. ‘Deep Chill’ provides the platform for continued growth and acceptance.

John Patitucci: One More Angel (1997)

Though One More Angel demonstrates bass-master John Patitucci's skills both as a composer and artist, in allowing others to contribute in both ways, Patitucci demonstrates a rare modesty that combines well with his musical role as a strong but subtle support rather than an overbearing titular lead. Featuring Impulse! artist Michael Brecker on tenor sax and Patitucci's wife Sachi on cello, in addition to pianist Alan Pasqua, tenor sax Chris Potter (who fills the role well in Brecker's absence), and drummer Paul Motian, Angel mixes noir-y slink and mournful silk to express sadness and strength through repetitive themes and flowing orchestrations. ~ Matthew Robinson, All Music Guide ”

Some of the funky songs had my head noddin' right from the start, and others that had more of a 'night groove' brought out a satisfied sigh...all of them had me turning up my cd player. His ability to blend in the spiritual made him a natural choice for ads on our 'Sacred & Smooth' show on Sunday mornings." - Dave DeAndrea, Program Director, Smooth Jazz 105.9 KYSJ

Jimmy Raney: Momentum (1974)

This 1974 LP marked a comeback for Jimmy Raney, following his long layoff from the music business in order to make a full recovery from alcoholism. Accompanied by bassist Richard Davis and drummer Alan Dawson, the guitarist is in terrific form as he explores several standards, a bossa nova-flavored "Nobody Else but Me," and a driving take of "Just Friends." He composed the other two works heard on the date. His piece, "'Momentum," is a reworking of an earlier original he called "Motion," both of which are obviously based upon the chord changes to "You Stepped Out of a Dream." "We'll Be Together" is an original ballad (set to words he wrote earlier, according to liner-note writer Ira Gitler), though it sounds as if it was partially inspired by "Autumn in New York"; it also features a strong solo by Davis. Originally released on MPS and reissued by Pausa, this record has been unavailable for quite some time, but it can be found with a diligent search.

Bootsy Collins: Back in the Day: The Best of Bootsy (1994)

Can it get any better? If aliens came down needing to know what funk was all about, in all its talented, embrace-anything-and-everything, screw with your head and get your butt down glory, then this is a prime candidate for what to give them. The man, his voice, his bass, the backing of a prime core band including his guitarist brother Catfish, Fred Wesley, and Maceo Parker leading the brass -- beautiful, hilarious, and just plain great. This one-disc collection could easily be a two-disc or more if one wanted to include every last highlight from Collins' up-down-all-around career -- his work with James Brown alone is beyond the bomb -- but when it comes to solo work, this is as perfect a place to start as any. Drawing mostly on the albums done with the active help of George Clinton in the late '70s, Back in the Day is a model for what a good compilation should be. Sound is excellent throughout, while full details on who plays what and where, along with where everything came from in the first place, all appear in exhaustive detail. The liner notes, meanwhile, come from longtime funk road manager (Brown, Prince, plenty of others) Alan Leeds, explaining every step of Collins' wonderful story. Collins himself gets in a great concluding bit of thanks and message that's a joy to read, and needless to say the photos of him in his sunglassed late-'70s star-bass-guitar glory abound. And the music? "Bootzilla," "Stretchin' Out (In a Rubber Band)," and "Pinocchio Theory" are just three jam masterpieces of many. A couple of fine rarities flesh things out; "What So Never the Dance," recorded in 1971 when Collins' band was still known as the House Guests, is a great slice of greasy, JB-tinged funk. "Body Slam!" shows him getting to grips with electro nicely, while "Scenery," originally a B-side ballad, has him doing his loveman-goes-nuts deal at the end. A fierce 1976-era live take on "Psychoticbumpschool," with the Horny Horns in full blow, wraps up this fantastic collection.

Jeff “Tain” Watts Quintet: Detained at the Blue Note (2004)

Drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts leads his quintet plus guest altoist Kenny Garrett through extended versions of four of his originals (all of which he had recorded previously in the studio) plus Bjцrk's "107 Steps." While "107 Steps" and "JC Is the Man" (which is more Thelonious Monk than John Coltrane) are fine, it is not until Garrett makes his first appearance on "Mr. JJ" (which is more Coltrane than J.J. Johnson) that this set really explodes. Garrett's passion inspires Watts during their midsong duet and adds a great deal of energy during the three songs on which he appears, completely stealing the show. Watts takes a surprise vocal on "Like the Rose" and plays with intensity throughout the performance, but it is Kenny Garrett who makes the music something special; it is a pity that he is not on the first two numbers. ~ Scott Yanow

Brian Hughes: Along the Way (2003)

Considering the musical journey that Brian Hughes has been on since becoming one of contemporary jazz's most popular guitarists, it's beautifully appropriate that he titled his long anticipated A440 Music Group debut Along the Way. Showcasing his most exciting melodies and guitar performances to date, the collection reflects on his cross country move from Toronto to Los Angeles and features guest performances from contemporary jazz stars, saxophonist Eric Marienthal and trumpet sensation Chris Botti.
"There is definitely a travel theme to Along The Way", says Hughes, "inspired partly by my move to Southern California and also by my extensive touring with (multi-platinum selling vocalist/recording artist) Loreena McKennitt " (a 16 year relationship of recording and performing that continues to this day). "In a way the new CD is a kind of loosely knit collection of musical postcards from my travels and the title serves as a metaphor for my musical journey."
"The move to Los Angeles has been very inspirational and the fantastic musicians who performed on Along The Way and make up my touring group, (bassist Tim Landers, well known for his work with guitarists Al Di Meola & Lee Ritenour, Neil Wilkinson, a top British session drummer who has worked with Paul McCartney, Van Morrison & Gil Evans to name a few, percussionist Jason Hann, who tours with Isaac Hayes & Rickie Lee Jones and longtime band member pianist Les Portelli), really take the music to new heights."
The musical chemistry is evident on Along The Way and Brian and the band have electrified audiences at festival and concert dates across the country. With his sizzling fret work and infectious compositions the media are accurate in saying: "Both a great artist and an accessible one. His passion is so obvious, intense and contagious, that his audience shares it.

Larry Carlton: Christmas At My House (1989)

You probably think, "Aargh, another Christmas album!" Surprisingly, this is a great one. Larry Carlton is at his best on "Little Drummer Boy" and "The Christmas Song". Every time I play this at Christmas, everyone wants to know "who is that, anyway?" There are 2 nice surprises on the album - a great pop tune called "Ringing the Bells of Christmas" sung by Michele Pillar and "The Christmas Song" (vocal) also by Pillar. Her voice is gorgeous - rich, deep, clear highs. Reminiscent of Karen Carpenter, but much more sultry and mature. Carlton has all the usual suspects on the album as well, including Kirk Whalum, Terry Trotter, Abe Laboriel. A real family album. A real nice one, too! Merry Christmas!
