Reinhard Flatischler Megadrum: Layers of Time (1996)

The sixth entry in Flatischler's Megadrums series finds him working with percussionists Zakir Hussain, Airto Moreira, Valerie Naranjo, Glen Velez and Milton Cardona, as well as saxophonist and flutist Wolfgang Puschnig. The resulting album blurs boundaries between world music and new age, building percussion layers into cycles and spirals that become hypnotic, pulses beginning in deep, long tones that evolve into mid-range tones that become gradually more staccato. Layers of Time is a progressive work, in that the opening rhythms are gradually and subtly altered to allow each individual piece to blend with those preceding and following (the opening of the album is emphatic). Layers of Time is easily comparable to Mickey Hart's Planet Drum and At the Edge in that it reveals the inherent ability of percussion instruments to fully support extended musical pieces without falling prey to monotony and simple repetition.
